The action was confirmed by the Congregation for Bishops on July 4, 1992. In the Catholic Church, the Feast of Ascension is a holy day of obligation (sometimes called holydays) when the faithful are obliged to attend Mass. This was decided at the November 1991 meeting of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. They are:Īlthough the obligation to attend Mass when these three holy days fall on a Saturday or Monday is abolished, parishes are to continue to observe these holy days by scheduling one or more Masses at a convenient time so that people who wish to participate are able to do so. When the following holy days fall on a Saturday or Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is abolished. We commemorate Jesus Christs ascension into heaven (as per Christian belief) by celebrating Ascension Day, which occurs on the Thursday, which is 40 (or 39). December 25– Christmas, The Nativity of Our Lord.December 8– The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.August 15 – The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.The Ascension of Our Lord – Observed on the seventh Sunday of Easter rather than on the Thursday after the sixth Sunday of Easter may they always try to live like Jesus and to grow more like Him as they follow Him each day of their lives.January 1 – Octave of Christmas, Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.Just as Jesus went up in the clouds, He will return the same. By entering heaven as the representative of mankind, He completed the work of our salvation and guaranteed the eventual glorification of all who love Him. Now in heaven, He is the ruler and Lord of all. Today is our liturgical celebration of the Ascension of the Lord, when Jesus was taken to heaven on the 40th day after Easter. In so far as possible they are also to abstain from those labors and business concerns which impede the worship to be rendered to God, the joy which is proper to the Lord’s Day, or the proper relaxation of mind and body. Ascension Day celebrates Christ's exaltation. I give You praise for being Your resurrection power, it is because of You that. Thank You for being the living water that quenches the thirst of all those who long for You. Every Catholic who has attained the age of reason, and is not prevented by sickness or other sufficient cause, is obligated to rest from servile work and attend Holy Mass on the following days. Heavenly Father, I thank You for sending Your Son who was with us only for a short time.
